I made some deviled eggs for a Christmas starter last year and

we all became so excited ~ a combination of freaky and nostalgic!

People always complain that Architectural Plans are impossible to read.

When I saw this cover I thought, damn pretty candyland, but actually what this colour-usage

does, is make the plan more legible. Remember those little carpets with roads on that some

boys use to have for playing-cars - sort of in that line.

Also dig the plain circle dots for trees instead of cad-blocks

I saw this pizzeria on Dezeen yesterday, done in Athens by Greek

Architects K-Studio. Immediately quite fascinated by the wood-shutters

that bend around to form a ceiling

I also think, it reminds me of South African Cape Dutch Architecture, so

even though its Greek design, for me its Afrikaans. I like me some Afrikaans anything

article in the Visi #32 (longago issue), i was quite wide-eyed

" To mark the 10^th anniversary of the Dutch Design Week, Premsela and the Dutch Design Week will host the exhibition ‘Spring: Excellence, Talent and Inspiration in Design’, at Eindhoven’s Designhuis museum. The exhibition will illuminate links between designers from different generations and countries. It will feature work by 15 acclaimed Dutch designers who got their start in Eindhoven, like Maarten Baas, Richard Hutten, Jurgen Bey, Piet Hein Eek, Volvo’s Corien Pompe and Ikea’s Monika Mulder, as well as those who’ve influenced them and emerging talents that inspire them. Each acclaimed designer will also choose a promising young designer to share the spotlight.

Maarten Baas chose Massoud Hassani to share the spotlight with him. Massoud Hassani spends his childhood in Afghanistan, where he would make miniature models to be blown by the wind. Sometimes they would end up in a minefield, from where he could not retrieve them. This childhood memory was the inspiration for his graduation project ‘Mine Kafon’, for the Design Academy Eindhoven. The ‘Mine Kafon’ functions as an anti-landmine device and will roll about detonating any mines in its path, creating safe paths to walk on. “Every destroyed land mine means a saved life…”

In the Spring exhibition, some of Maarten Baas iconic pieces will be shown together with Massoud Hassani’s Mine Kafon."

Christo and Jeanne-Claude prepared for their next project, "The Umbrellas". The plan was to have yellow umbrellas set up in California and blue umbrellas in Japan at the same time. In December 1990, after much preparation, the first steel bases for the umbrellas were installed. At the bases 80 cm long anchors were fastened to the ground to withstand tensions of 1,500 kgf (15 kN). In September 1991 the umbrellas were brought to their places by 2,000 workers. In California, some of the bases were transported to the site by helicopter. The final cost of the project totaled $26 US million. By 7 September, 1,340 blue umbrellas in Ibaraki and 1,760 yellow umbrellas at the Tejon Ranch in southern California had been set up; the exhibition opened on 9 October 1991. In total, 3 million people saw the umbrellas, each measuring 6 meters in height and 8.66 meters in diameter. The umbrellas became a huge tourist attraction, finding use as everything from picnic spots to wedding altars. On 26 October 1991, one of the umbrellas in California was toppled by high winds, killing one woman and injuring several others. The exhibit was ordered closed immediately.^[11]

Last Weekend Cape Town City Hall played host to The President's First

Toffie Food Festival. The Building's orientation and stained glass

windows permitted the most beautiful soft light into the rooms and onto the

objects/food curated by The President to display.

a pretty cheap and innovative idea, as found in South African

magazine House and Leisure ( way back in November 2006 )

is making your own bookshelves via stacking books on your stairs

and buying maybe a nice piece of pine from Timber-city to suspend

over.

you also dont need to put books on both sides, but

make sure your shelf doesnt topple over. I made

this little retro graphic quickly to demonstrate.

Through a witty set of polemical drawings, Krier takes us through an intuitive listening process. Good architecture, like good music, can be made when the component parts are understood. Each building has architecture and is located in an urban context, Krier explains. Both the architecture and urban context can be either classical (formal) or vernacular (informal). Or, there can be a mix of vernacular and classical. With these three “tunings,” Krier creates a matrix of nine possible character-types of cities and towns. Some are good to excellent — the best, he explains, arises when both the architecture and urban design display a mix of vernacular and classical characteristics. Some are bad — the worst, he says, is monoform vernacular architecture superimposed on a rigid grid: the design of concentration camps.

Perhaps better than any other architectural polemicist, Krier also explains other characteristics of buildings and urban design. Like music, there is more to a note than its pitch. There are duration and intensity and feeling. Buildings have uses (civic, private, and commercial), scale, and proportion. Krier shows in drawings and words how to think about these qualities and tune them correctly. Even a city with the ideal mix of vernacular and classical design becomes dissonant if scale and/or proportion are off. One can argue with some of Krier’s positions — a formal grid, according to his matrix, is capable of satisfactory urbanism at most — but one cannot fail to learn a great deal by understanding his aesthetic views. Like Book | Pop-Up Architecture and the Change of Dimension-Realities

In the beginning we tried to translate & capture our 3D world onto paper.

But You can tell that lately a shift/transformation in the world of the dimensions

has become more popular.

As more and more 2D films are becoming 3D

( not that harry potter was any better in 3d than 2d, vomit )

and our 3D/real worlds are becoming more Virtual + Augmented ( with your iPhone in one hand )

it looks like the book (who needs words....joke ) might also follow this trend/shift

One idea which is pretty cool, as found on DWELL's website, is Wendy Evans Joseph's monograph called

Pop Up Architecture. I guess it is a nice coffee table addition to any firm who's cardboard models

have started to collect dust plus its an easy introduction of your built work for a client rather than a long PowerPoint presentation.
